Eventually, this expansionism translated into conflict, climaxing in 1898 with the Spanish-American War. ![]() The dream for global destiny was justified by such logic as the expansion of overseas markets, desire for a stronger navy, and the spreading of Christianity to uncivilized peoples around the globe.
